Steps to Freedom from Cigarettes

Despite the Surgeon General’s warning on every package of cigarettes,
smoking is still the leading cause of preventable death in America. Smoking
results in 390,000 deaths each year, and smokers have a 61% increase in
overall death rates compared to non-smokers. The correlation between smoking
and cancer is well documented and frightening.
Smoking is especially detrimental for women. Smoking lowers the levels
of estrogen, the female hormone. This causes the skin to become rougher
and more masculine looking. In addition, at menopause women’s estrogen
levels drop even further. Since estrogen is necessary for the absorption
of calcium into the bones, women who smoke have the highest risk for osteoporosis
and for breaking their hips in old age. Smoking also causes hardening
of the capillaries in the skin which results in premature aging. This
is an additional disadvantage for women whose skin texture is already
compromised by their lowered estrogen levels due to smoking.
As a non-smoker who has been smoke-free for almost 3 years, I decided
to include a smoking cessation program in my hypnotherapy practice. Hypnotherapy
has shown to be very effective in helping people quit smoking.
Many smokers struggle with quitting and are miserable because they can’t.
Believe it or not, will power and desire alone are not enough to quit
smoking. Some people can do it that way. But most people need more help
and a few tools to be successful. Isn’t it time to try a different
way?
Three Steps to Freedom Smoking Cessation Program
Over three sessions I help my clients examine their smoking history and reasons for quitting. Then together we reframe beliefs and attitudes about nicotine addiction and develop new behaviors and strategies to avoid old triggers which I reinforce using hypnotherapy techniques. I provide education on the psychology of cravings and how to overcome them. During the trance inductions I assist my clients in amplifying their reasons and goals for being smoke free. The sessions are reinforced with new behaviors assigned as home activities that support non-smoking and a list of natural aids that reduce cravings and support detoxification. Many people are able to quit in three sessions.
